In Toronto there are Strikes too

Yes... Today the bus-drivers and the subway-drivers have decided not to work. In fact this strike is illegal because:
  • There are no minimum services
  • There was no advice
Can you imagine? In this moment I am in the school and I have to get my home on foot. I guess it's about 2 hoars walking. Yahoooooo.

You know what?

Maybe, when you try to learn English in Spain you don't realize that you really know nothing about pronunciation. .

I mean, once your are in UK, Canada or wherever you want, you find out that your vocabulary is not so huge as you thought before and you discover there are 20 different sounds for 5 vocals.
And YES, a lot of times is really important to know how to pronounce these strange sounds.
And NO.. you can't rely on the context when you use words like:
--beach or bitch
-- shit or sit or sheet, or seat.
-- Paul, pole
-- leave, live
-- chess, cheese

I've just found this link. It's really bad, but...

But it is what it is.. and I guess it's better to stop know because I'm putting myself off... :-/

Health insurance

Last week one Korean guy got locked in the washroom in my School. The point is that, instead of waiting for help, he decided to jump out the window. First floor. Maybe he was a bundle of nerves. Who knows...

After the Jump, the teachers called up the 911 (like 112 in Spain). And whenever you phone 911 an ambulance not only comes but a fire truck comes as well.
The ambulance took him to the hospital and he passed there one night. Altough He injured his back he is OK.

It wasn´t until the day after that he found out he hasn´t got Health Insurance. Do you know how much he has to pay for the "service"? About $4500. Can you believe it?

I suposse he forgot to contract the Health Insurance because it only costs $1.5 per day!!!

So.. don´t forget to contract a good Health Insurance when you travel abroad.

Metric system vs Imperial Syste

Once you are in Canada, you could think on Canadian measurement as the mutant child of the metric system. They drive in kilometres and buy gas in litres, but they still take the measure of theirselves in pounds, feet and inches.

If you go to the supermarket you will find a hybrid that is impenetrable even for the Canadians. It´s true, they sell luncheon meats in grams but for everything else it´s pounds and pounds and pounds (and conversion tables just in case someone ask for fish by kilogram)

It was 35 years ago whe the Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau set up the Metric Comissión to start converting the country. It seemed a good idea at the time. Most of the planet was already metric. Even the American were talking about switching..

But a lot of people complained about the Metric System. In fact, during the Cold War someone said "Did you ever look around at the countries in the world today with metric?.... the socialist countries of the world today".In other words, if you say "I am 1,70 m tall" you are comunist!!!

Acoountsssss

Hi!!!

In this moment, I don´t feel like writing anything in this blog but I have get back to it.

On Saturday I tried to open an account in a bank. Why? Because everytime I get money from an ATM, I have to pay a 5.5% commision -Don´t ask me why I though it was "only" 3 euros per use-.

Although my documentation is OK -Passport, Visa- I couldn´t open the account. As far as I understood, I need the support of a Canadian. I mean, I need the signature of a Canadian as if I still was a minor. I need one Canadian to take responsability over me!!!

Don´t make fun of me about it. You know it make no sense.

About Korea

If you come to Toronto, you´ll discover that there are a lot of people from China, Korea, Japan... In fact there is a ChinaTown too.

But in this case, I´ve decided to write about the Korean people I´ve found in International House.

Do you know that they are addicted to Internet? It´s said this addiction is becoming a big problem in their
country. In fact, a lot of people doesn´t go to work because they have to play Doom (or something like that). But like or not, if you really need to check your email three hundred times a day, you have a serious problem and you must try to sort it out.

In the other hand, I wonder what is about Korean food that so many Canadian find appealing. I tried it last week and you have to know tha it´s extremely spice. It´s like to blend china food with chilly. No sense!!!! But it is what it is, and if you can try the REAL korean food, try it. Don´t let me put you off.

Do you know korean men have to enroll the Army during 30 months?
You could say "Come on, that´s hard to believe" or "You must be jokking".. But you have to remenber that close, in North-Korea, there is a guy called King "Idon´tremenberthename" who is really crazy -to say the least-.

Anyway. No more Korea.

Today is the Dr. House Day. And the newspaper has announced that is going to be the BIGGEST espisode of the year.
"Will the doctors be the first to die?"

Next episode, next day.
